Counselling vs Prayer Ministry
A word from Celeste

People who know I am a Christian Counsellor often ask. “What is the difference between Christian counselling and secular counselling?”

Invariably my reply is, we do similar things regarding use of psychological approaches, strategies and interventions to promote mental health and emotional healing.

However, unlike secular counselling which focuses on identifying people’s limited inner resources and character strengths to help them develop the skills to face their challenges and deal with their issues, Christian counselling focus on the word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit to equip encourage and strengthen as people address their issues and learn how to make positive changes in a safe and trustworthy environment.

Not surprisingly the question that follows is “so what is the difference between Prayer Ministry and Christian Counselling”?

My next brief response is ‘Prayer Ministers, through intercessory prayer, and cooperation with the power of the Holy Spirit guide people into a time of reflection and meditation where divine truth is revealed and erroneous thinking patterns and undesirable behaviours exposed.’

Then having gone through this Prayer Ministry  process, the role of the Christian Counsellor is to teach the person to change erroneous thinking patterns, help them develop life skills that might be lacking and change undesirable behaviours so that they may experience a psychologically healthier, spiritually richer and more productive life.

One important thing to remember in all of this is that God will not do for you what you can do for yourself.
